Garment Family Story

Garment Family Story is a digital archive that gives used garments an identity and keeps their stories connected as they move into new lives.

Every garment entering the system receives its own unique ID. We record what we know about it — where it came from, when it was received, what type of garment it is, its colour and other relevant details. Some pieces also carry a personal story.

These garments become the Parents.

When they are transformed into something new, the new pieces become their Sons & Daughters. Several garments can become part of one new design, creating a visible connection between the original pieces and the garment that follows them.

The system makes these relationships traceable. Each new garment has its own digital record and can be connected back to the garments from which it was created.

This creates a growing Garment Family — a living archive of garments, materials and transformations.

The idea comes from my long-term practice as a fashion designer working with upcycling, reconstruction and existing garments. Garment Family Story continues the Resampling System I developed through my former label SCHMIDTTAKAHASHI, where garments were already given individual identities and connected through their transformation into new pieces.

Today, the system is being developed further as a digital infrastructure for circular fashion.

Rather than seeing a used garment as anonymous material, Garment Family Story preserves its identity and makes its journey visible.

Where it came from.
What it became.
And what might come next.
